Satirical commentary on Canadian and American current political issues

One Word for What’s Going on in the States: “Nuts”

The U.S. has just passed 130,000 Covid-19 related deaths, while the President claims that 99 percent of those infected don’t have to be concerned. Now, you have the 43-year-old rap star Kanye West announcing via Twitter on the Fourth of July that he is plans to run in the 2020 election for U.S. president. Great, now one has one nut job aspiring to replace the current nut job.  Obviously, he can’t run for either of the two existing parties. However, unfortunately there is technically a way that West could still run for president. He would have to register as an independent candidate.  This would depend on where he wanted to run, as deadlines for those intending to run in several states have already passed with the remainder closing registrations by August.  Like many, I can only hope that this is a PR stunt or some form of joke à la comedian Pat Paulsen who ran satirical campaigns for President of the United States between 1968 and 1996.

What’s happening in the States is no longer a laughing matter. The issues raised by the Black Lives Matter movement are no laughing matter.  The record daily counts of positive coronavirus cases are no laughing matter.  The increasing violence and shootings in American cities are no laughing matter.  While the relevant statistics are a concern, the impact on individual Americans, particularly on those marginalized and vulnerable citizens, is even more of a concern.  The inability of the national government to provide real leadership in light of the realities of the afflictions, including the pandemic, affecting the society is of grave concern.  Instead, the President is perpetuating policies of division in order to placate what’s left of his supporters in order to somehow get re-elected — no matter what the consequences.

All this may represent the last straw, given that the President continues to ignore the advice and concerns of his own advisors and leading experts. As an extreme narcissist, Trump is unable to admit that he had made mistakes and that his decisions have resulted in unintended consequences, both within the U.S. and elsewhere. There is an old adage that you get what you voted for.  That definitely applies in this case a hundred times over.  Perhaps, Trump should secretly elope to Russia into the welcoming arms of his friend Vladimir Putin, another extreme narcissist. However, I’m not too sure that the First Lady, Melania Trump, would join him?

Treating Tweets By Donald Trump As Gospel And The Impact on Governance

At no time in American Presidential history has technology created serious concerns regarding the separation of powers and the obstruction of justice. When the American President tweets out something, his administration, his followers and the general public treat it as gospel.  Gone are the normal press conferences of the past, only to be replaced instead by tweets and short media scrums.  The problem is over how to draw a line between the ad hoc public declarations of the President and perceived interference in the justice system.  Remember, the justice system is expected to be an independent part of governance and rightly so.  Besides Congress and the Executive, the justice system through its various branches is designed to ensure independence and impartiality in its decision making processes and in enforcement of the law.

However, Attorney General William Barr has now stated that President Trump’s criticisms of the handling of his friend Roger Stone’s sentencing has undermined the legal system, and he is not able to do his important job. Although there may be no direct evidence of interference by Trump, his tweeted assertions that the Justice Department’s Prosecutors’ push for a sentence of up to nine years for Stone’s convictions was too harsh could only be perceived as an attempt to influence the Attorney General.  Subsequently, the AG decided to overrule his own prosecutors and withdraw the sentencing recommendation, giving the appearance of caving in to Presidential pressure.  Instead, the AG’s office suggested that the prosecutors instead lay out factors for Judge Amy Berman Jackson to consider in sentencing Mr. Stone but defer to her on the length of the final sentence. With this outcome, the four prosecutors resigned from the case in protest, with one actually leaving the Justice Department.

As the New York Times notes, speaking up could have put Mr. Barr at risk of losing the backing of the President, but remaining silent would have permitted Trump to continue attacking law enforcement and all but invited open revolt among the some 115,000 employees of the Justice Department. Previously, the President had made it difficult for Mr. Barr to maintain the appearance of independence, threatening the AG’s credibility by repeatedly calling for federal investigations of Trump’s perceived enemies.  Trump had suggested to the president of Ukraine that he work with Mr. Barr and the President’s personal lawyer Rudolph W. Giuliani to investigate for personal political benefit some of Mr. Trump’s political opponents: i.e. Joe Biden and his son. This action of course formed the whole basis for the impeachment hearings and trial against Trump in Congress.

Even more serious, is the fact that public statements by any President, in whatever format, are considered as the administration’s official position. Despite the fact that the President’s staff often is forced to follow up with a further explanation of just what the President’s assertion was, Trump’s initial tweet will always be taken by his followers as gospel.  This may play well with Trump’s base of support, but will often undermine the credibility and sanctity of the three separate legs of governance and democracy.  Even the Republicans in Congress are now beginning to realize that the powers of the President have to be restrained as intended under the Constitution, given the importance of the intended checks and balances provided by the three arms of government.

Liar. Liar. Lie Your Pants On Fire.

Do you remember this little rhyme when you were a child? I do.  Having listened to Donald Trump’s speeches and having read his tweets over the last three years, one cannot believe that it doesn’t apply to the current President of the United States? I don’t need to go into outlining each and every account since most major American news media has clearly recorded the hundreds of outright lies.  Now, the President’s staff do try to downplay Trump’s lies and inaccuracies but to no avail.  They suggest that the President was misquoted or misunderstood.  Indeed, no one has ever apologized for his “gross misstatements” or downright “lies”.  Interestingly, the Democrats are focusing on Trump’s character as they argue in the impeachment trial for his removal from office.

Trump has come up with every excuse under the book. He frequently claims that he doesn’t know people who he has had business with or have had their pictures taken on several occasions with him.  His number one co-liar is of course Rudi Giuliani who claims to be Trump’s personal lawyer.  Indeed, the impeachment trial has shown just how Giuliani is the President’s personal henchman.  The problem is that Giuliani has a tendency to open his mouth before first thinking about what he is saying.  Even Fox News has questioned why Giuliani was working in Ukraine as the president’s attorney, instead as a government official or an appointed presidential envoy with an official title. The impeachment proceedings have made it very clear that the President was initially withholding military aid to the Ukraine as a club to get the Ukraine authorities to launch a fraud investigation into past dealings by Joe Biden and his son with the Ukraine. Of course, despite all the evidence, Trump denies the allegations, seconded by Giuliani who proclaims that the President did no wrong. Instead, Giuliani is on record as proclaiming that “Joe Biden is a crook and he sold out the United States of America — in Iraq, in Ukraine, in China” without ever offering a thread of proof.

Meanwhile, despite being on trial, the President is calling the shots for the Republican Senators in the impeachment trial. The President’s defense has yet to offer any new evidence or witnesses to counter the charges that were brought forward.  All you get are “conspiracy” theories and deny, deny and deny some more.  After all, Trump did nothing wrong as the President has publicly declared a hundred times before.  Can one really believe him?  Unfortunately, with a Republican controlled Senate, there isn’t any chance that the President will be impeached.  Too bad!

November Is Here, Leaves Are Falling And So Is The President

There’s a cold wind blowing here, but not as cold as the one in Washington, D.C.  Congress has voted to proceed with the impeachment hearings over the President’s dealings with the Ukraine and consequential national security concerns. Just to remind us, the Ukraine has been fighting against attacks in eastern Ukraine by Russian-backed forces after Russia took over Crimea. As a result, NATO allies, including Canada and the U.S., agreed to supply the Ukraine with military aid and training. Apparently, President Trump delayed the transfer of American aid to the Ukraine on the condition that the Ukrainian administration investigated business dealings by Joe Biden and his son. Such activities would have occurred during Biden’s stint as vice president of the United States from 2009 to 2017. This request was made despite the fact that the current Ukrainian administration had earlier investigated matters related to state corruption and found no evidence of any direct link to the Biden’s.

Although the President has denied that there was no “quid pro quo” arrangement with the Ukraine concerning the matter, closed-door testimony by white house officials before the congressional committee appears to contradict the President. Hopefully, the upcoming public hearings will help clear the air as to what actually took place.  The American public needs to know the truth one way or another.

Yet, here’s the clincher. With Trump, his intervention in Ukraine appears to have been an abuse of his powers, but, conceivably, not a crime. The debate about the criminality of the President’s behaviour with regard to Ukraine, on some level, will always remain a theoretical matter.  Trump’s lawyers will argue that such dealings between heads of states are just a normal part of foreign policy initiatives. Nevertheless, Trump proceeded to use his position as President to have a foreign government look into what is obviously a matter of politics in light of the upcoming presidential election.  Does such a move represent an abuse of presidential power and a real threat to American national security?  That will be up to Congress to shortly decide and American voters to eventually judge at the polls.

Whatever comes out of the impeachment hearings, there is little doubt that Trump and his administration and the Republican Party are on the defensive. Congress has a right to defend the constitution and no president is above the law.  The rest of the world is closely watching and is deeply concerned about the subsequent consequences and greater instabilities.  Things most likely will get nastier and partisan divisions will grow even wider in American governance.  God help the United States of America!

Senator Kamala Harris Would Make a Good President

Well, a presidential election is scheduled to be held in the fall of 2020. Already, the debates have started among a boatload of Democratic hopefuls in preparation for the upcoming primaries.  Who is going to run against Donald Trump?  Hopefully not the likes of Joe Biden or Bernie Sanders!  It would be nice to see a President who isn’t over the age of 75 and who didn’t carry a lot of baggage.

Right now, I believe that Senator Kamala Devi Harris would be an excellent candidate for a variety of reasons. First and foremost, at 54, she is part of Generation X (those born between 1965 and 1980) which helped to bring in the twenty-first century.  Secondly, she is a woman of  Jamaican or Indian ancestry, reflecting the new diversity with the U.S. population. Although she has no children, she has two adult stepchildren through her marriage making her aware of parental issues affecting today’s youth.

Her professional qualifications provide her with a good foundation for dealing with today’s issues. Since 2017, she has been California’s third female U.S. Senator. Prior to that, Senator Harris served as the San Francisco District Attorney for seven years and as the Attorney General of California for six years.  As a prosecutor, she dealt with numerous high-level cases.

With respect to her progressive policies, she has supported single-payer healthcare, actions on climate change, education reform, federal descheduling of cannabis, municipal protection for undocumented immigrants, the DREAM Act, and lowering the tax burden for the working and middle classes while raising taxes on corporations and the wealthiest one percent of Americans. She is someone who would not rely solely on the military to formulate foreign policy, as is the case now.  Her positions are in sharp contrast to those of President Trump and the Republicans.  Americans need to have a clear choice between two platforms and two visions of what kind of country they want, with no mudding of the waters by the centrists.  Such a contrast was not evident during Hilliary Clinton’s campaign.

If I were Donald Trump’s campaign team, I’d be a lot more concerned about Senator Harris as an opponent than either Sanders or Biden. While he represents the past and the status quo, she represents the potential for a dynamic and new prosperous future for America.

Where Does It All End? — The Weird Era of Donald Trump

This past week has shown a bout of insanity not seen for some time under any American president. First, we had Michael Cohen’s testimony before the House Oversight and Reform Committee, calling the President “a liar, racist and conman.”  Wow!  Then we had the abysmal failure of the Trump-Kim talks over North Korean denuclearization and end of U.S. sanctions. Next, we had word of Trump last year ordering officials to grant top-secret security clearance to his son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner, despite warnings by his own senior counsel and chief-of-staff not to grant such clearance.  Congress now wants officially to look further into the matter.

Meanwhile, 77-year old Bernie Sanders has once again declared himself a presidential candidate for the Democrats in 2020. Some analysts have predicted that as many as 40 Democrat candidates may launch bids against Donald Trump for the White House.  One may have to issue them football sweaters, each with numbers and names since there would be enough players to form their own NFL team. The trouble is that they don’t appear to have a common game plan, with some moving far to the left and others trying to be more centrist. Are Americans really ready for democratic socialism, a brand already attributed to Democrats by Trump? Ah, those dam lefties!

Last but not least, we have the President issuing an emergency order so as to take existing funds from the defense and other budgets to help pay for the construction of “barriers” along the border between the U.S. and Mexico. The U.S. House of Representatives then voted to revoke Donald Trump’s declaration of a national emergency to build his wall, whose efforts Trump vows to veto. Of course, the whole situation — due to valid questions of constitutionality — will end up in the courts, probably lasting several months if not years before a final decision is rendered.

What’s worst, numerous Republicans, mainly because they are afraid of Trump’s base, are increasingly backing the President’s executive orders and crazy political manoeuvrings. Of course, all of these shenanigans make good fodder for comedians and Saturday Night Live sketches.  One doesn’t know whether to laugh or cry!  As William Shakespeare once wrote: “All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players.”  In this case, the politicians are playing the role of clowns, with Trump leading the way.

Unbelievable — Racism Continues to Rear Its Ugly Head In The Southern States!

During the Sixties, I followed and studied closely the American news media coverage related the rise of the civil rights movement in the U.S.  The incredible emergence of movements led by Dr. Martin Luther King, Malcolm X and Stokely Carmichael greatly interested me at the time as a Canadian student of American history and political science.  My studies also looked at the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) and the Black Panther Party. With the federal Civil Rights Acts of 1964 and 1968 and other U.S. laws which ended segregation practices and moved to protect civil and voting rights, it looked like Americans were on the right track to deal with overt practices of discrimination. With the election of Barack Obama as the first black President, it looked like the U.S. had finally overcome many of the inequities of its racial past.

However, some things just refuse to change. First, there are all those statues in the U.S. dedicated to the infamous period of the Confederacy which fought against the Union forces to conserve its abominable practices involving black slavery. You would think that people would have matured enough in the eighties, nineties and today to understand the real sensitivities that African Americans have today about a history involving inequitable and inhumane treatment.  Yet this doesn’t appear to be the case.  We now have the white Governor of Virginia, Ralph Northam, and his Attorney General Mark Herring acknowledging that they wore blackface at parties in the 1980s. Unbelievable!

Although both men have apologized for appearing in blackface, many Virginians are outraged by the admissions. Sure, both were young and college students at the time, but this is no excuse.  Knowing Virginia’s racial history, both men should have known better. What’s worst, they don’t appear to see any self-evident need to resign.  The sad part of the scandal is that it shows from a cultural perspective how much further Americans need to go to deal with its racial attitudes.  Hopefully, they have learned from these incidents and will work more closely with people of all races to deal with racism in its midst.  We in Canada must also learn from our own past and history of racism and discrimination. Given that this is Black History month, we owe it to our children to learn from history and move forward together into the future.

U.S. Federal Government Leaves Public Servants and Their Communities in Economic Turmoil

Well, here we go again! Back in January 2018, I blogged briefly about the then federal government shutdown in Another U.S. government shutdown – is this anyway to run a country?

Now, we are almost a month into the longest shutdown of government services in U.S. history, all thanks to President Trump’s insistence on funding for a larger wall, barrier or whatever at the Mexican border. As a result, over 800,000 federal public servants have been furloughed or are working without being paid.  Needless-to-say, this is having a negative impact on most workers and an economic impact in the local communities in which they live.

Imagine, the shutdown is affecting security at airports with TSA agents calling in sick or turning to temporary jobs to make ends meet. Air traffic controllers are being forced to work extra hours because of no new personnel are graduating from their training institute.  Food safety inspectors were unable to carry out their daily inspections.  National parks, while open, have no park wardens or other employees to oversee their daily operations, often putting visitors at risk.  Homeland security personnel are also affected, including Coast Guard workers.  Farmers are forced to wait for government subsidies.  These are only a few of the key government services that are affected.

As for local communities, federal government jobs represent many of the better paying jobs in the communities. Normally fairly stable, federal workers contribute to local economies by buying homes, paying municipal taxes, volunteering, purchasing local goods and services, etc., etc.  Many public servants are highly educated and have chosen public service over working for often higher wages in the private sector.  They have chosen public service careers because of relative certainty, good pension plans and health insurance, perks that are harder to come by as an employee in corporate America. In addition, an increasingly diverse public service offers an equalizer for African-Americans and women, who are far more likely to earn high salaries working for the government than they would with a company.

Whether one supports public servants or not, the fact is that they play an increasingly major role in modern society. The on-off-again shutdowns of recent years do nothing to enhance the reputation of the government to potentials hires.  The loss of many important government services and economic contributions is not what the U.S. needs at this time. Experienced and highly-skilled employees are reconsidering their future employment options, threatening to create the potential loss of talent at a time when the federal government needs it the most.  Congress and the President need to get on with the business of governing, sooner rather than later.

What’s Sad — It’s Still An Old Boys’ Club In The U.S. Congress!

Watching Christine Blasey Ford and Brett Kavanaugh testifying on September 27th before the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee really brought home the image of the Senate as still being an old boys’ club.  There you had a cast of old Republican senators sitting in judgement of Dr. Ford, preferring to have hired an Arizona prosecutor Rachel Mitchell to ask questions on their behalf. This was of course a political stunt to avoid giving the impression of a bunch of old guys ganging up on a woman.  What’s worse, the whole circus was conducted as if it were a criminal trial instead of a Supreme Court confirmation hearing.

This event brings me back to a recent study by the Pew Research Center in the U.S. which looked at the proportion of women to men in senior positions in governors’ seats, state legislatures, Congress, businesses and education institutions. What the study found is that only 20 percent of Congress is women, although women make up over half of the American population.  Women represent about 22 percent of senators.  The density of women in the House of Representatives is just below 1 in 5.  In both cases, most women are Democrats.  Hopefully, there could be more than 60 women who assume new seats in Congress after this November midterms — most of those women being Democrats. In addition, the Center found that Democratic presidents have had more heavily female Cabinets than Republican administrations.  There are far fewer women in Trump’s Cabinet than there were in Obama’s.

Other Western countries have achieved much more equality of government representation than the U.S., and even Canada. Moreover, Judge Kavanaugh comes from a primarily white male environment, attending the right prep schools and having the accepted middle-class conservative pedigree.  What’s there not to like, especially within the old boys’ club in Washington.  There are currently only three female associate judges on the nine member Supreme Court, with the one existing vacancy.  Just for once, maybe the President could have considered nominating another respected female jurist to the Supreme Court, conservative or otherwise.  However, unfortunately we know what Donald Trump thinks about women!

Mid Summer Madness of the Trump Regime – Summer of 2018

In recent months, actions and tweets by President Trump have become even more erratic and unpredictable than usual. His bizarre behaviour may lead some people to believe that he is suffering from heat stroke.  Let’s review what he’s been up to this past summer:

  • As a reprisal against Turkey for jailing one lone American citizen, the S. levied harsh sanctions against this NATO ally which threaten the derail that country’s economy or drive Turkey into Vladimir Putin’s circle of influence.
  • The President said local politicians “wanted a number so ridiculously high”, around $92 Million, that he canceled a planned military parade that the Pentagon had already postponed until next year. He blamed Washington officials for inflating expected costs for an unwanted parade.
  • Trump revoked former national security advisor John Brennan’s security clearance, which may be the latest sign that the president is determined to punish anyone connected to the Russia investigation. Kind of reminds one of the Richard Nixon days and the political “revenge” factor.
  • The President referred to one of his former White House staff, Amarosa Manigault Newman, as being a “dog”, in anticipation of her soon to be released book, “Unhinged”. His office also denied unconvincingly that he had never used the “N” word, a charge made by Ms. Manigault Newman.
  • He has threatened to impose tariffs on automobiles assembled abroad and on automotive parts, something that the auto industry has warned would cause all kinds of havoc and productivity losses.
  • His administration has threatened more tariffs on Chinese goods, causing major problems for U.S. supply retail and manufacturing chains.
  • Over 300 news media have issued a statement that the continued reference to “fake news” by the President is threatening to undermine the freedom of the press.
  • Etc., etc.

Yes Mr. President, it’s been a hot summer. Your administration is in constant turmoil with contradictions and outright lies flying everywhere — signs of continuing disarray. Unfortunately, when the U.S. sneezes, most other countries tend to catch a cold. The state of the world economy and politics is at stake.  Maybe it’s time to get off the ongoing campaign trail and act more Presidential.  Every tweet and personal attack now causes further consternation and disdain among Americans and allies abroad.

The summer is coming to an end, and one can only hope that the fall will bring better things. The big question is whether the November elections will bring a gust of fresh air.  It’s time for Americans to respond and support democracy by voting.  Let’s hope that common sense prevails, and the President stops acting like a mini-Musollini.
